A journey to the Orient, following the traces of the Austro-Hungarian Empire.

An entertaining journey, starting in Vienna (via Bosnia, Turkey and the Holy Land, to the Nile Pyramids, and back) takes us to the exotic world of the Middle East around 1900. In the offices of European travel agents it was possible to book a varied range of "all inclusive" holidays, along the lines of modern packages, without the need for payments in cash. They offered an artificial world in which the travellers remained isolated within their own society, fulfilling the advertising slogan of the time "Egypt without the Egyptians". Comfortable travel was made possible by modern means of transport, such as the Orient Express, Österreichischer Lloyd and Nile steamers, which only the upper classes could afford. But there were occasions when the poor travelled too – pilgrimages to the Holy Land. In this way, Tyroleans of both sexes travelled with the Brixen Pilgrimage Association to visit the holy sites in Palestine. The presence of the Habsburg Empire in the East is illustrated by means of the consulates and post offices which were established in the course of 19th century colonisation, and which could be of assistance to travellers. The range of exhibits is colourful and exotic, ranging from tropical helmets and travelling first-aid kits, to pilgrims' identity cards, hookahs and prayer rugs, contemporary photographs, fine prints and many other items. Pack your cabin trunk and join us on our journey!
